Safety measures, educational plans announced for Aug. 21 solar eclipse

Posted on August 16th, 2017

The School District of the City of York has made some plans to ensure the safety of all students while providing a unique educational experience during the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21.

Our first priority is to keep students safe. We do not want students to injure their eyes by looking directly at the sun, so all students will remain inside their buildings during the afternoon eclipse from 1 p.m. until dismissal.

The administration has asked teachers in every building to live stream footage of the eclipse so that students can experience this phenomenon safely. Special activities related to the eclipse are also encouraged but will depend on the individual classroom.

All buildings will dismiss at normal times. Dismissal time is 3 p.m. for William Penn Senior High School and 3:45 p.m. for K-8 buildings. High school athletic practices will be delayed until 4:30 p.m.
