Third graders elect their teacher ‘class president’

Posted on September 25th, 2017

Last week, my Ferguson third graders began learning about the process of elections and why voting is so important.

We read the story “Duck for President” a few times and discussed what makes a great leader. We decided to have an election for class president — me (Ms. Oxley) vs. Duck from the story.

The students made their voter registration cards and campaign posters, and I gave a speech. On voting day, we made a makeshift voting booth and the students lined up waiting to vote. Inside the booth was a ballot for them to vote on and once they were done, they were given an ‘I Voted’ sticker!

We had some older students count the ballots and I won the presidential class election!
