Hearing on Helen Thackston charter scheduled for 10/17 has been canceled

The hearing officer has granted the joint request from counsel for both the Helen Thackston Charter School and the School District of the City of York to cancel a public hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17. The hearing is continued until Friday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m.

York City School District After School Program

The School District of the City of York, through a partnership with Martin Library, offers a free after-school program in all K-8 buildings to benefit the students and engage more members of the community. The after-school program begins promptly at 3:45 p.m. with a snack for the students, followed by an enrichment period from 4 to 6 p.m. The program ends each evening with dinner from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

For the 2017-18 school year, the After School Program begins Wednesday, Sept. 6.

There’s still time to register! Parents/guardians can obtain a registration form from the school office or download one below.  Once completed registrations have been received by the after school staff, parents will receive an acceptance letter.  Parents can also get in touch with the program manager, Jackie Dell-Shearer, at (717) 849-6956 or jdell@yorklibraries.org.

Martin Library strives to have a vibrant role in the development of a culture that promotes motivated readers and learners for life by providing the students a place for collaborative learning, creativity and for developing informational literacy skills.  Thus, the main purpose of the After School Program is to enrich our students academically, physically and emotionally in a safe environment.  Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, the After School Program provided services to more than 1,100 students with an average daily attendance ranging from 80 to 120 students in each building.  Some of the programs the students can participate in during the enrichment period include, but are not limited to, small group tutoring and computerized tutoring, Leap Into Science, STEM programming, cultural heritage education, yoga, hip hop dance, gardening, photography, theater, creative writing, cosmetology, character education, Bricks for Kids, Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts.  The students also enjoyed many presentations from outside providers such as “The Bug Man,” Zoo America, Bob the “Critter” Guy, York Waste-Recycling, the Sheriff’s Department and the York City Fire Department.
