Check and Connect is an evidence based truancy intervention program provided by Pennsylvania Counseling Services in five York City schools. The program is focused on promoting students’ engagement with school, reducing dropout, and increasing school completion. Participating in Check and Connect provides an opportunity for students to build a trusting relationship with a mentor whose primary goal is to keep education a priority for students over a two year timeframe. Mentors “Check” attendance and academic performance regularly, and “Connect” with students about progress, goal setting, and problem solving, as well as being available to listen to personal concerns. Mentors promote cooperation between families, schools, and services to enhance communication and deepen student support.

Currently Check and Connect is provided at Jackson K-8, McKinley K-8, Ferguson K-8, Devers K-8, and William Penn Senior High School. Students in 5th-8th grade with four or more illegal absences are eligible to be referred for participation. If interested in learning more about the Check and Connect Program please contact your child’s school attendance officer.
