K-8 Grade 4th Marking Period Information
**Report cards and the information below will be mailed to families directly**
Dear Bearcat Families,
Congratulations Bearcats you did it! This year has been challenging indeed but we made it through together. We hope you and your family are safe and healthy as you read this letter. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we have reimagined education for our Bearcat students over the past couple of months. We are appreciative of our students, parents, teachers, staff, administrators, and volunteers for their positivity, flexibility, and resilience.
During distance learning, our goal was to provide continuous educational opportunities for students. Student engagement has been a central focus of academic instruction. We have continually emphasized the following three goals for Phase One and Phase Two of the K-8 Grade Continuity of Education Plan:
- Equitably engage students’ hearts
- Equitably engage students’ minds
- Collaborate extensively
As we close out the fourth marking period, the following information will provide guidance on distance learning grading and promotion for the fourth marking period:
Grades will be identified based on Pass or Incomplete for all K-8 students.
- Pass: The student gave an effort on the assignments given during the weekly lessons. The student attended virtual lessons when possible. The student asked questions when needed and demonstrated an understanding of the required skills.
- Incomplete: The student completed a few assignments (or less). The student did not demonstrate the level of interest needed to grow in the related subject, skill, or content area.
Be advised, if your child(ren) receives an Incomplete for a grade this DOES NOT mean they have failed their current grade level. An Incomplete grade will be used in the 2020-2021 school year to identify possible academic intervention needs. Your child’s report card will state Promoted or Candidate for Retention. If the report card states your child is a Candidate for Retention, communication about retention would have been received prior to the closure of schools.
Edgar Fahs Smith STEAM Academy Update
The Edgar Fahs Smith STEAM Academy, a district school that emphasizes a project-based learning approach to education, will be accepting students for the 2020-2021 school year. This year there will be no formal application process. Due to the anticipation of a limited number of spots available, the School District City of York has developed a google form for families who are interested in their child(ren) attending the STEAM Academy. Student acceptance will be determined based on a lottery system. Please click or type the link below in your web browser to access the google form. All information must be submitted via the google form by July 14, 2020, to be eligible for consideration.
District- Loaned Electronic Device
The School District of the City of York recognizes the potential impact that the state-mandated closure may have had on your child’s education. We believe in ensuring every opportunity for our Bearcats to continue learning even through the summer months. For this reason, district-loaned electronic devices will remain in your possession as we have expanded access to summer learning opportunities. A date will be announced before the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year for when district-loaned electronic devices will need to be returned to your school building. If you are planning on withdrawing from the School District of the City of York you will need to return your device. Contact your school building to inform them of your decision to withdraw and they will provide you with the necessary steps to return the district-loaned electronic device.
Please contact your school administrators if you have any questions. We look forward to the day when we can see our Bearcats in person, but until then, have a wonderful summer. Always remember — We Can’t Hide That Bearcat Pride!
See you soon Bearcats,
Andrea J. Berry, Ed.D.
