Jackson’s Communities in Schools coordinator wins national award

Posted on August 30th, 2018

Leyna Rozon, who serves Jackson K-8 as its Communities in Schools coordinator, has received a national award for her work to reduce the school’s out-of-school suspension rate.

The All In for Students Awards, created in 2007, honors the exemplary dedication of CIS staff, educators, community partners and CIS alumni, who go all in for students, empowering them to stay in school, graduate and go on to brighter futures. Image of Communities in Schools Coordinator

Recognizing a need for positive decision-making services within the school, Ms. Rozon has assisted hundreds of students through her self-facilitated groups focusing on reducing aggression and increasing self-esteem.

Ms. Rozon also works individually with an average of 55 students per year.

“I am a firm believer that every day might not be a good day but there is something good in every day, and I want my students to believe that too,” Ms. Rozon said.

The School District of the City of York first partnered with Communities in Schools for the 2014-15 school year. The dropout prevention program currently serves six district schools.

“Being nominated and winning this award is incredibly humbling. The students I work with are my biggest motivator, and I am just so lucky to be in the position to make a positive change in their lives,” Ms. Rozon said.
