School District Of The City Of York

Visit From Governor Tom Wolf

Posted on September 13th, 2016

A visit from the governor and an announcement of big plans further underscored a great start to the 2016-17 school year for the School District of the City of York.

Last year, Superintendent Dr. Eric Holmes proudly walked the governor around the halls and into the classrooms at Goode K-8, where the district’s literacy initiative is always on full display.

This time, Dr. Holmes invited Gov. Tom Wolf to see for himself the good work happening at the STEAM program at Ferguson K-8.

Gov. Wolf told reporters after the tour that he saw elementary students studying science in a way that wasn’t introduced to him until his time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Gov. Wolf also said he supports the emphasis on creativity in the district’s STEAM program.

Dr. Holmes told reporters during the governor’s visit that the district is exploring the possibility of starting a STEAM Academy to serve more York City students.

An exploratory committee is forming now, and Dr. Holmes plans to present a proposal to the school board in the spring.

On Sept. 10, Tajira Wilson and Jeremy Bultron worked on their individual pieces for 4.5 hours and completed a colored chalk drawing following the theme ‘fair food.’ The pieces will be on display the week of the fair. Judging will be by ballot, with the public voting for their favorite.

McKinley Hosts Genius Hour

Posted on March 10th, 2016

A group of 7th and 8th grade students are meeting every afternoon at McKinley for “Genius Hour” to work on projects they’ve chosen. The idea was inspired by Google, where employees are given 20 percent of their work time to pursue personal projects (Gmail was created by this process).

This student, Luis Montalvo, is developing an app for managing type 1 diabetes. Montalvo, an 8th grader, said he’d like to be a doctor when he grows up.

Devers Flag Flying Thanks to Firefighters

Posted on March 10th, 2016

The light on the flagpole at Devers recently broke, which meant that the school wasn’t able to fly its flag at all. The school’s generous neighbors donated a new light and the awesome York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services stepped in to complete the task.

It really does take a village. A huge thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Waughtel for making sure Devers could fly its flag with pride.
