‘Bear Necessities’ opens for families in need

Posted on December 10th, 2018

The STEAM Academy is now home to The Bear Necessities, a resource closet for families in need. The Bear Necessities includes personal hygiene products, cleaning supplies, school supplies, hats, and gloves.

STEAM Academy students helped jumpstart The Bear Necessities by participating in their own collection drive in October.

Students donated LOTS of items in order to help provide for families in need. Pictured to the right are three students from Ms. Karen Keener’s class who donated the most items to the collection drive:  Oistin Maldonado, Chris Sanchez-Bonilla, and Sonia DeJesus.

If you would like to make a donation or are a STEAM Academy family in need of a donation, please contact the School Social Worker, Cristina Lentz, at (717) 916-2186.

STEAM students visit engineering program at Penn State: University Park

Posted on December 2nd, 2018

Students in grades 8 and 9 from the STEAM Academy recently visited Penn State’s main campus, University Park, for an introduction to the university’s engineering programs.

The STEAM group was greeted by the Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion, the Director of the Engineering Ambassadors Program and Student Engagement Initiatives in the College of Engineering, and a team of student ambassadors.

In the aerospace engineering testing room, STEAM students observed the Ultrasonic De-icing: Wind Tunnel Testing for a demonstration of “instantaneous ice shedding.”

Penn State has the only aerospace engineering department in Pennsylvania.

The department is recognized as one of the top aerospace engineering departments in the nation and is an international leader in aerospace education and research.

STEAM students also visited the Wind Energy Club, which provides opportunities for students interested in wind energy and its industry to design a wind turbine.

The Wind Energy Club offers K-12 outreach activities associated with wind energy to promote STEM for the next generation.

Students also visited Penn State Formula SAE, which is a student-run design team tasked with designing and prototyping a formula style race car for the annual Formula SAE competition.

The competition provides students with an opportunity to apply their engineering, organizational, and communication skills in an industry-like setting.

STEAM students were also invited to a Blue Band rehearsal and treated to ice cream at The Creamery.

The trip to University Park was organized by Penn State Talent Search, a program that offers higher education guidance and resources to students from low-income families and those who would be first-generation college students.

With an office at William Penn Senior High School, Penn State Talent Search serves about 500 students from the School District of the City of York.
