On the morning of May 30, 2024, State Representative Carol Hill-Evans visited Ms. Mertz's classroom at Smith STEAM Academy to present 6th grader, Michael Fleming with a medal and certificate of achievement. Five students also received a certificate of achievement for participating in the essay contest. Students in grades 4-12 were asked to submit a typed essay about a community service club or center that they would like to create. Michael wrote an essay about how he has a desire to start an organized chess club to help bring the community together in a positive way. Congratulations Michael! #BearcatPride
